This semester, we’ll be learning the basics of typography and pursuing two areas of inquiry into type:
1. subtle, readable, functional type that needs thoughtful planning and attention to typographic norms and details. 2. bolder, experimental type like that used in posters, in environments, on book covers, or to otherwise attract attention.
This course will introduce those two ends of the spectrum, give an historical basis to understand their roots and evaluate both of them, as well as give the technical grounding to start working with them.
We’ll study and design books and other long-form text to get experience with appealing, readable type. And we’ll dive into more experimental work, both digitally and by hand to get a handle on typographic play.
