Learning how to print a book from Indesign
Talking about the beginning of our Book project
For next time:
Bring in your printed, finished, bound Type Specimen
Bring in 3 options for your book’s content (as explained here)
Sometimes, you need to print or work on a different computer than the one you’ve been using. In that case, packaging Indesign documents can help. Packaging will gather all the images and fonts in your file into one place so that you can work or print on another computer more easily.
In our first project, we’re going to design and produce books. We’ll start off by finding the text for them. The text itself doesn’t need to be that exciting. Often, boring text can make a great book.
Text Requirements
- Texts need to be 8,000 – 15,000 words.
- Nonfiction. So, no fairy tales, no plays, no novels, no short stories, no fables, etc.
- Texts need to be in the public domain.
As you’re making these type specimens, take a screenshot (or two or three) of your pages/spreads that you like.
Then post them here.
Today in class, we are:
Looking at what you have so far for Type Specimens
Refreshing any necessary Indesign skills
Working on the Type Specimen exercise
For next class:
Finish the Type Specimen exercise
(create pages/spreads for at least half of the typefaces in the list)
Create a cover for your Type Specimen (according to the directions here) wait on this
For your cover, use the following text:
Type Specimen Your name Fall 2019
In designing your cover:
- use any typeface that you’ve already used in your type specimen
- then find a second typeface to pair with it
- use a combination of these for your cover
For your type specimen to successfully work as a book, you’ll need to:
- Make sure it has a number of pages that’s divisible by 4.
- Make sure it has a title page.
- Make sure the last page is blank.
(don’t include the covers or inside covers in your count)
- Name your Space exercise like this:
space_lastname.ai - Make sure you’re logged in to your Loyola Google account (this won’t work if you’re not)
- Go to the following link and upload your Space Exercise to turn it in.
Today in class, we are:
Turning in the digital Space Exercise
Turning in the Word Space Exercise
Talking about Indesign
Starting a new exercise
For next time:
